My Role as a Birth Doula
I am a certified birth doula, serving growing families in Truro, NS, and surrounding areas. My goal is to help you take charge of your pregnancy and birth- to become educated about your options, make informed decisions about your care, and empower you to advocate for yourself. I help you to explore your ideas, hopes, and fears about pregnancy, birth, and early parenting, and learn about normal physiological birth. I help you to learn ways to cope with labour’s intensity- including its unpredictability- and guide your partner in providing effective support for you, so that you can approach birth with confidence and trust. I provide compassionate, continuous labour support (including advocacy and physical, emotional, and informational support) to help you have a positive, empowering birth experience. After the birth of your baby, I offer the support you need for processing your experience, breastfeeding, and confident early parenting.

Monthly mamas walk
Let’s go for a walk! All mamas (from pre-conception through pregnancy and postpartum… and grandmotherhood!) are invited to join me in a monthly walk on a nice trail in Truro (and if the weather is bad, we’ll just come to my house and drink tea and eat delicious and fattening things). A great way to get some outdoor activity, connect with other mamas in Truro, and build a strong birth and parenting community as we share and learn from one another. If you are curious about doula care or placenta services, this is a chance to meet me (and past clients!) and find out more. If you’re a past client, this is a chance for us to catch up, and for me to snuggle your growing baby! Let’s take time to celebrate ourselves as women and mamas, and build a supportive community! Fathers, partners, and kids are also welcome, of course!
I have a double stroller and several wraps/slings/carriers if anyone needs (or just wants to try!) these, and I can also fit 2 people in my car if anyone needs transportation.
The next Mamas walk will take place on Monday, March 5, at 1pm. We’ll start at my house (316 Brunswick Street), and maybe take a walk down to Victoria Park. It will likely be a mostly sidewalk-walk unless trails are clear enough for strollers (or unless we’re all babywearing). The weather is supposed to be mild, but if not, we’ll just hang out at my house. I hope to see you there! Call if you need directions, 843-5953 or 1-855-499-BABY(2229). The facebook event is here if you’d like to view or share!
Doula Fee
Those new to doula care may initially feel that a doula’s fee for service is quite high. Please consider that my time commitment for you is generally 40 hours or more, and that I am on-call for you for up to four weeks. Please check out my Doula Fee page for more understanding and a breakdown of my fee.
Exploring Doula Care
Not sure if doula care is right for you, or which care package best suits your needs? Please contact me, and we can schedule a complimentary consultation- a chance to meet me in person, and exlpore the idea of doula care, with absolutely no obligation to hire me as your doula.
In this meeting, you can learn more about what my role is as a doula. You can ask any questions that you may have, and we can talk about your pregnancy, your hopes for your birth, and your needs. As we become acquainted, you can decide if I am a good fit for your family, situation, and personality. This is your opportunity to “interview” me, and does not obligate you to hire me as your doula. I encourage you to meet with other doulas as well, so you can hire the doula who you feel most comfortable and connected with.
Benefits of Birth Doula Support
The journey of birth is powerful, and profound. Research has shown that a woman’s perception of her birth experience has a significant impact on how she sees herself as a woman, as a mother, and on how she relates to her child(ren). Clinical studies consistently show that doula support improves clinical outcomes of birth (shorter labours, reduced rates of induction, cesarean section and instrumental birth, reduced requests for pain medications, and more). Doula care also helps parents feel positive about and empowered by their experience of birth, and more confident and successful with breastfeeding and adapting to new family dynamics.
